Rhodes, Greece

Galleria Pemuvia Society and ICARO C.A.G.A. proudly present Hic Rhodus, a satellite exhibition held in conjunction with the 2nd Biennale of Contemporary Ceramics in Rhodes.

Curated by Apostolis Artinos, the exhibition brings together contemporary ceramic practices in dialogue with the cultural, historical and geographical context of Rhodes.

Taking its title from the ancient expression Hic Rhodus, hic saltus — “Here is Rhodes, here is where you must leap” — the exhibition places artistic creation within a specific place, inviting artists to respond to Rhodes not simply as a historical site, but as a living field of memory, encounter and contemporary artistic production.

Ceramics, with its particular relationship to earth, fire, water and the human hand, provides a material language through which questions of place, transformation and cultural memory can be approached. In this context, the works presented in Hic Rhodus explore the possibilities of contemporary ceramics beyond the boundaries of traditional craft, positioning the medium within the broader field of contemporary art.

The exhibition takes place at the historic Auberge de France (Inn of France) in the Medieval City of Rhodes, one of the island’s distinctive architectural landmarks. The historic setting provides a particular context for the contemporary works, bringing together the material presence of ceramics with the layered history and cultural memory of Rhodes.

Hic Rhodus forms part of the wider programme of the 2nd Biennale of Contemporary Ceramics in Rhodes, which runs from 6 June to 31 October 2026. Through this satellite exhibition, the Biennale’s programme extends into one of Rhodes’ most historically significant sites, creating a dialogue between contemporary ceramic art and the island’s architectural and cultural heritage.

The exhibition is presented by Galleria Pemuvia Society and ICARO C.A.G.A., with the Region of South Aegean and the Auberge de France Rhodes as co-organisers.
